Assistance to Firefighters & Aid to Firefighters Grants
Grant for Automatic Fire Sprinklers
In May of 2014 the department received a favorable award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (FEMA) for the installation of automatic fire sprinklers in Fire Station 2. The grant, in the amount of $72.750, will bring the fire station up to the latest fire code standards and provide a much needed safety feature for both firefighters and visitors. The fire department advocates automatic fire sprinklers for all buildings as an effective means of controlling early-stage fires, thus reducing losses due to fire.
Grant for an Exhaust Capture/Removal System
In November 2008, the Fire Department received a favorable award from FEMA for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for an exhaust capture/removal system for Fire Station 2. The exhaust removal system is designed to remove diesel emissions before they can pollute the air making a cleaner environment for both employees and visitors alike. The grant amount of $35,000 included funds for the installation of 3 exhaust capture points.
Grant for Personal Protective Equipment Update
In October 2007, the Village of Hanover Park was awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for 2006 from the Department of Homeland Security. The grant was used to update the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for all firefighters, ensuring compliance with current National Fire Protection Association standards, which includes the new Drag Rescue Device. Morning Pride® bunker pants and coats were purchased along with Ben Franklin II® helmets, protective hoods, gloves and Pro Warrington® leather boots. The grant was valued at $87,120 with a 10% match by the Village.
Grant for Self Contained Breathing Aparatus
2005 the Village of Hanover Park was awarded $107,800 in Aid to Firefighters Grant money to purchase 32 CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) compliant Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. MSA ™ SCBA were purchased which included masks equipped with Nightfighter™ Heads-up Display System and integrated PASS Devices. A Port-a-Count was also purchased enabling computerized fit testing.
Staffing Grant
In 2006 the fire department received funding for 3 new firefighters under FEMA's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant totaling $300,000 over 5 years. The funds are used to hire new firefighters to add to the existing staff in order to better response to emergencies. The funding provides salary and benefits over a 5 year period decreasing each year until the firefighters become fully funded by the village.
