Light the Night for Fallen FirefightersOnce again, the Village of Hanover Park will be participating in activities to remember and honor fallen firefighters from April 27 - May 4. Each year, an average of 80 firefighters make the ultimate sacrifice and lose their life in the line of duty. During this time, we take time to show support and honor those that have perished. We ask all to participate by joining in the Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters campaign by lighting your home or business with red light to show support during this upcoming week. Light the Night builds into the weekend of May 3rd and 4th when the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation sponsors the Memorial Weekend. This event includes a ceremony and remembrance that is held for all firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. To recognize and support the Memorial Weekend, the Mayor will be issuing a proclamation to lower the flags to half-staff and invite everyone to ring a bell or pause for a moment of silence any time on May 4th. For more information on Memorial Weekend or ways to Honor fallen firefighters, visit https://weekend.firehero.org/.

New Tornado Siren System Launched on May 1st. The Village has six outdoor warning sirens strategically located throughout the jurisdiction in order to warn our residents of severe weather. Up until now, the sirens have been activated manually by our 911 Dispatch Center, DuPage County Public Safety Communications (DUCOMM). DUCOMM is pleased to announce the official launch of its new Fulton automated tornado siren system, which went live on May 1st. The new automated system enables real-time activation of outdoor warning sirens directly from the National Weather Service (NWS), ensuring faster, more consistent alerts during tornado warnings. The system is designed to reduce manual steps in activation, minimize response time, and enhance reliability – ultimately helping to save lives. Key features of the new system include: - Automated activation based on NWS tornado warnings
- Geographic targeting of sirens to affected areas
- Improved speed and accuracy of alerts
- Redundancy and monitoring capabilities to ensure system reliability
As a reminder, when the outdoor warning sirens are activated, they will run for 3 minutes to alert residents to seek shelter. There will NOT be an All-Clear siren. Be sure to seek additional information from the NOAA weather radio or local news media. Did you know? - Sirens are not only used to indicate a tornado. They may be sounding for high winds +70mph and destructive hail.
- The sirens are not meant to be the main source of weather warning indoors.
- Our sirens are tested on the 1st Tuesday of every month at 10am for one minute.
- The National Weather Service does not have the capability to take over the radio airwaves in the Chicagoland area. Your cellphone may be your only notification of a Tornado Warning.
Visit DU-COMM | DuPage Public Safety Communications or Emergency Management Division | Hanover Park, IL for more information.
