U.S. Route 20 traces its origins to 1925, when state and federal highway officials recognized the need for a coordinated system of numbered roads to accommodate the nation’s growing automobile traffic. By 1926, several major cross-country routes had been established. Among them were Route 66, stretching 2,448 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles; the Lincoln Highway (Route 30), spanning 3,142 miles from Atlantic City, New Jersey, to Astoria, Oregon; and U.S. Route 20—also known as the U.S. Grant Highway—which runs from Boston, Massachusetts, to Newport, Oregon, and today extends approximately 3,365 miles. No matter the direction, Route 20 passes through a rich tapestry of cities, towns, and small communities, each with its own character, history, and local personalities.

Hans' images are on display in the Hanover Park Branch display case from Monday, July 27, through his presentation on Monday, August 10.  To register, visit the library's website.
