T
he Village of Hanover Park has six outdoor warning sirens strategically located throughout the jurisdiction in order to warn our residents of severe weather. Up until now, the sirens were activated manually by our 911 Dispatch Center, DU-COMM.
DuPage County Public Safety Communications (DU-COMM) is pleased to announce the official launch of its new Fulton automated tornado siren system, which will be live starting May 1, 2025.
The new automated system enables real-time activation of outdoor warning sirens directly from the National Weather Service, ensuring faster, more consistent alerts during tornado warnings. The system is designed to reduce manual steps in activation, minimize response time, and enhance reliability – ultimately helping to save lives.
Key features of the new system include:
- Automated activation based on NWS tornado warnings
- Geographic targeting of sirens to affected areas
- Improved speed and accuracy of alerts
- Redundancy and monitoring capabilities to ensure system reliability.
As a reminder, when the outdoor warning sirens are activated, they will run for 3 minutes to alert residents to seek shelter. There will NOT be an All-Clear siren. Be sure to seek additional information from the NOAA weather radio or local news media.
Did you know?
- Sirens are not only used to indicate a Tornado. They may be sounding for high winds +70mph and destructive hail.
- The Sirens are not meant to be the main source of weather warning indoors.
- Our Sirens are tested on the 1st Tuesday of every month at 10am for one minute.
- The National Weather Service does not have the capability to take over the radio airwaves in the Chicagoland area. Your cellphone may be your only notification of a Tornado Warning.
